Microsclerotherapy is a specialized procedure designed to treat spider veins (thread veins) and small reticular veins. It involves injecting a sclerosant solution into the veins to cause them to collapse and fade over time, improving both appearance and symptoms.
Microsclerotherapy is preferred over alternatives like laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) for its ability to treat hidden feeder veins, quicker procedure time, and minimal risk of skin damage, scarring, bruising, or swelling.
Before treatment, a duplex ultrasound scan may be performed to identify underlying varicose veins. The procedure itself involves injecting a sclerosant into the affected veins using a fine needle, followed by compression stocking application.
Patients can typically resume daily activities immediately after Microsclerotherapy, though strenuous exercise should be avoided initially. Compression stockings may need to be worn for up to two weeks to support healing.
It is advisable to avoid flying for at least two weeks post-treatment, especially for long-haul flights, to minimize the risk of complications related to vein health and circulation.
